It’s time for Cyril to man up and get tough on vaccination

Vaccine mandates might not be universally popular in SA, but the president needs to act for the greater good of the country

At the beginning of the first Covid lockdown, when announcing the deployment of the military, President Cyril Ramaphosa said something profound. With a mildly bemused defence force chief, Gen Solly Shoke, sitting behind him, the president told the assembled soldiers that “this is not a moment for skop en donner” or “for skiet en donner”.

And those who were minded to defy the new disaster restrictions, he said, should be “nudged” in “the right direction”...
