Multimedia producer (junior)

Reporting to: News Editor Video/ Head of multimedia

Department: Group editorial

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg

Position overview

We are looking for a multimedia producer to work in our multimedia team producing original multimedia content daily across video and audio for all Arena Holdings websites – including TimesLIVE, BusinessLIVE and SowetanLIVE.

Main responsibilities

  • Creating short, punchy videos for use on social platforms

  • Writing, producing, shooting, voicing, recording, editing and publishing multimedia content in a manner that is clear, engaging and meaningful to our audience on all Arena platforms.

  • Assisting in sourcing and executing news investigations

  • Occasional collaboration with audio department

  • Weekend and after-hours work will be required at times.

  • Generating a strong diary to service “fast-news” and “slow-news” streams 

Skills that would be an advantage

  •  Strong on-camera presence and ability to do voiceovers.
  • Experience in “live” video settings and technical knowledge thereof.
  • Experience in a digital role in a newsroom.
  • A diploma or tertiary qualification in journalism or similar field would be advantageous.

Personal skills/attributes

  • An ability to write with flair and accuracy

  •  Current knowledge of local and world news events.
  • Confidence in coordinating, organising and conducting interviews.
  • Developing and maintaining a network of contacts for exclusive stories.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Photoshop, Audition and basic After Effects).
  • Expertise in using various professional cameras and recording devices.
  • Speed and accuracy are paramount.
  • Self-motivated and problem solving team player.

Graphic designer & layout sub-editor

Reporting to: Surveys and special projects editor

Department: Group digital

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg 

Position overview

Are you passionate about graphic design, especially in the print medium? Do you want to join a small but dynamic team at one of SA’s biggest news publishers?

We are looking for an experienced graphic designer to work in Arena Holdings’ surveys and special project team, helping us produce surveys and special reports in magazine, tabloid or broadsheet format for insertion in Arena Holdings print publications or for publication on Arena Holdingswebsites.

 Main responsibilities 

  • Break compelling hard-news stories ahead of competitors
  •  Designing, laying out and producing full surveys or special reports, including:
    • designing all stand-alone survey covers in Photoshop/Illustrator, and recreating all supplied graphs and tables in Arena Holdings style; and
    • laying out surveys in GN3/4 (the Arena Holdings print production system) and coordinating the full production workflow (layout, subbing, proofing, editing, getting sign-off from clients, sending pages for printing etc).
    • preparing surveys or special reports for publication on Arena Holding
    • Designing and laying out one-off advertorials to be included in Arena Holdings print publications.coordinating and commissioning images and other graphics;
    • Helping with layout and production of other group editorial products as required, for print or online.
    • Designing survey synopses and mock-ups for the advertising sales team.
    • Ensuring all deadlines are strictly met with attention to detail.
    • Weekend and after-hours work will be required at times.
    • Work closely with sub-editor to ensure all deadlines are met and product is without any production errors.

Skills that would be an advantage

  • Excellent working knowledge of the whole Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign).
  • Strong organisational and communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Excellent understanding of all design processes and principles, layout and technical skills.
  • A strong portfolio that shows experience with a range of programs and materials.
  • Highly computer literate
  • Previous experience on the GN print production system.
  • Broad knowledge of business news and topics.
  • Attention to detail
  • Fast learner
  • Online editing/sub-editing experience with a good command of the English language.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree/diploma in journalism or a related field.

  • Current driver’s licence

Night news editor

Department: TimesLIVE

Location: Parktown, Johannesburg 

Purpose of the job

To manage the TimesLIVE newsroom on a late shift, identify, edit and write breaking news stories for TimesLIVE, identify and prepare follow-up stories of national interest and impact for the next morning.

Main responsibilities 

  • Manage the TimesLIVE news desk in the evenings to break compelling hard-news stories ahead of competitors
  • Identify and pursue hard-hitting journalism pieces
  • Edit and write both free and premium content for TimesLIVE to established style and deadlines
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality stories at night and for the following morning
  • Managing reporters based in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town
  • Work across titles with different section editors and news editors, particularly at night as the main port of call due to the nature of the shift
  • Assist on editing premium online copy and stepping into an acting premium editor role as required
  • Actively involved in longer-term planning and storytelling
  • Liaising with stringers and freelancers on late copy
  • Ensuring copy is published on shift and planning for publication the following day
  • Work with other news editors to implement performance management for reporters
  • Edit stories for legal or ethical issues.

Requirements

  • Relevant Diploma/Degree or equivalent;
  • At least 10 years’ experience in journalism including experience in managing a team of journalists in a fast-paced environment
  • A good general knowledge.

  • An ability to work fast and fault-free
  • ​An ability to manage a team of journalists in a high-pressure environment
  • The ability to generate story ideas, identify strong news angles and keep abreast of developments in general news
  • The ability to work in a high-pressure environment and consistently deliver quality content across print and online platforms
  • The successful candidate will be motivated, able to work independently, be a team player and work irregular hours.
